Tough call, if you wanna understand streams do basic japanese language reps, structure, some grammar, and learn basic words, phrases. In meantime do your katakana/hiragana reps (but not extensively) (kanji will make you depressed, don't do it right away). When you catch grasp of basic language structure, watch streams while doing words/verb reps (use latin alphabet for now)
basics are most important, as you will start to understand flow of language it will become easier to learn it.
again, don't do kanji right away, im serious, it will make you depressed, and your motivation to learn japanese will drop dramatically.
This tip is for understanding spoken japanese(it's fairly easy), written one is hell.
And i know it's cliche and controversial, but try watching animes RAW, and then with subs.
