Here are some historic and current badges of 3 FCs, chosen because it's close to home and I know a bit about them and their history.
>Werder
A single letter and a pretty consistent design. The actual shape of the badge changed in the past, the 1st few were vastly different which is pretty typical. The founding date is often featured on badges, but this is totally optional. Many badges have that 1 very striking design element, that W for example, the 96 for 96 duh and the red lion for Eintracht.
Such a simplistic design works and is very recognizeable.
>96
Can you guess which colour their shirts usually have? That's right, red. The city of Hannover assigned colours to FCs and they decided that 96 has to play in red jerseys.
Still, their badge features the Prussian black-white and green for whatever reason. The most prominent design element is that 96 which refers to the founding date of 1896, but they used a shield, a shield in a circle and also just a flag with their club's colours in the past. A note about that flag, the badge is unironically that image of a flag with the flag pole and not just a black-white-green flag itself.
Note about 1968 - 1987: Their badge was actually a square with a circle on it, that green is part of the badge and not just some background. Even when they decided on that cirle, they frequently changed the design of the number, changed the shade of green, added and altered an outline for the 96, etc. That striking design element is indeed bigger than the circle itself.
>Eintracht
That red lion is the symbol of the city itself and the badge's striking design element. Unlike Werder and 96, they write down the whole name of the club on the edge, include its legal form and the founding year of 1895. However, they also used a simpler form in a different shape in the past (which was strongly rejected by fans).
That city crest in the middle should have a red outline to follow actual rules of heraldry. It was a big talking point when it was reintroduced, but they somehow didn't do it in the end.
That design of the lion changed quite a bit over time... and when a local liquor manufacturer was club president, he instead introduced his company's deer instead. This is how jersey ads were introduced in Germany: Ads on the shirt were illegal back then, so he changed the crest and superimposed it on the shirt.
In 2017, they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their only German championship and therefore just flew the city's badge with that inscription of "German football champion 1967". Yes, that was the official badge for a year. All in all, some huge variety in the way how each of these 3 clubs introduced nothing but minor changes over time.
I hope this may help you to design something.
