Yeah you are correct. I think keyword highlights and glossaries ala Morrowind but modernized and improved could work, but most gamers ignore stuff like that. An advantage of the highlighting system is if you do it via mouse over, you can do a lot of exposition for concepts or setting-relevant pieces too. If we're talking VNs specifically, it's less of an issue because the kind of person playing a VN enjoys reading and a highlight that leads to a glossary is something they probably would enjoy to flesh out context and lore. The next best game type for this is an RPG especially CRPGs. For most games yeah, it's a struggle.

They're spoken of fondly by Treebeard but what I remember is Yavanna put the Ents and the Entwives on Middle Earth to shepherd and protect the trees and Huorns, in specific forests. As ages passed the Entwives were no longer found... I'd imagine given Entish anatomy, they might do the dirty but I have no idea how that'd work without creating some plant/animal hybrid sex system
