For any hobby, trend, or pop culture meme there is always a small vanguard of innovators/taste makers that tend to have an outsized impact. That doesn't mean everything they do is adopted by the masses, a lot fails or is ignored, but a lot is picked up by early adopters and then sanitized a bit for the masses. This is true in music, fashion, and pretty much any creative endeavour/hobby. 4chan is a whirling tornado of shit and mental illness, but a lot of good content and memes are generated here. Go to a fashion show and a lot of it is just stupid bullshit and it's all impractical to wear, but it gets toned down and all of the sudden every white girl 18-25 is wearing a variation next year.
