yes anon, language changes and evolves over time. if every english-speaking person suddenly decided to replace the word "quick" with "phast" or some shit, that's how it would be regardless of whatever etymology was behind "quick"
also etymology is literally just the study of how language changes, there's nothing about how roots of words have to be followed or anything
