/vt/ - Virtual Youtubers

I went to my high school's anime club once and it was just 3 fat dudes arguing about Evangelion vs Eureka Seven vs Code Geass. I sided with the Evafag of course, like anyone with good taste.

This stream was great but I'm getting kind of annoyed by how easily /vt/ falls for manufactured narratives and strawmen.
The conversation about parasocial relationships that Zea and all the vtubers on Twitter are talking about is a completely different conversation compared to what's got people upset on this board. Nobody ever suggested you can't feel emotionally attached to a livestreamer's content. Pretty much any content creator can acknowledge being emotionally attached to their fans and fostering a similar relationship from their fans.

The issue comes when you let that attachment delude you into thinking the streamer owes you something or has a deeper relationship than they do. A commonly cited example would be paypigs getting mad at a streamer for having a boyfriend when it has 0 connection to their stream content and the streamer never ever suggested she'd date her viewers. You can totally appreciate Finana or Fauna or Pekora's content the same way you can be a fan of Hatsune Miku or a random anime character. You can even be emotionally attached to these characters and build a shrine of merch and figurines or go to conventions/concerts to show your support. But no one in their right mind would be upset that their anime waifu's voice actress is married.

The fact some people think being a fan of vtubers is somehow more intimate than being a fan of anime/game characters is where the issue comes in. I find it kind of ironic that /vt/ of all places seems to fall into this delusion that vtubers are "real people" and not just characters. Meanwhile back in the /jp/ days the entire appeal of vtubers back when Kizuna Ai or Kaguya Luna or Tsukino Mito were a big deal was that these people are simply characters no different from anime waifus but with more consistent and creative content than anime. It seems like somewhere along the line vtubing got invaded by people who want Twitch thots/camgirls and wish for vtubers to behave this way. For the fans of Japanese vtubers who were initially attracted to vtubing for the cute anime girls this is an entirely alien idea. I guess it's unsurprising given most of /vt/ came to enjoy vtubers when HoloMyth debuted, so most of them don't actually like anime/otaku stuff or care to separate the character from the person behind the mask. Nobody ever wanted to date the voice actor behind Kizuna Ai when she was exploding in popularity. The fact her identity was a secret and she marketed herself as an actual AI was precisely to avoid those types of people.

That said, it's fine if a vtuber wants to foster an intimate relationship with their viewers, as long as it's mutually agreed upon and reciprocated by both parties. An example of this would be Nene Amano from Kawaii or Yura Rikudou from Prism. They both behave very intimately with their viewers and provide tons of fanservice and GFE, because that's their goal for their content. Projecting those expectations onto all vtubers when most of them just want to entertain is what's wrong and why many vtubers are lashing out against their unwanted schizos.
