As someone who has had birb pets, they mostly take care of themselves but it really depends on the species. Most smaller birbs will be fine in pairs without you fucking with them but larger species can be highly obnoxious and take a LOT of careful training and handling. One of the worst things you can do right away is put them in their cage and isolate them from you. You want to be working with them from day one so they get used to you and realize that their cage isn't a place where you're not allowed and where they feel "safe" from you. It shouldn't be a punishment place nor a safe space. It is just a place, like the rest of your house. They should be comfortable going in there and being comfortable in there for when you're not home (otherwise a parrot will fucking destroy your home when it gets bored) but otherwise they should not really want to be in there.
