Only to realize that in the eyes of everyone they have effectively become the persona they adopted, and are now all alone (as no one knows who they really are).

The whole concept of the song is basically "Don't pretend to be someone you aren't for the sake of success, because you'll end up losing yourself and being lonely and miserable."
