Sometimes when I have trouble connecting the dots myself, I try to let myself mull over the ideas I have while I'm specifically not trying to write. You can use that trip to mull things over bit by bit during your free time or just as you're doing whatever. Bursts of inspiration can be great for overcoming those hurdles and tend to come when you least expect them to. Hope your trip goes well though.

All that aside, you just thought of a way to make what you wrote even better. It sucks that it feels like its going back to the WIP status, but you'll feel amazing when its done with the new scene you wanted to put in.
