uhh, internet says that because our first names are mostly adjectives and an adjective comes before the noun it describes. People probably started calling each other 'big-chinned Ed' and shit and it just stuck. We also happened to be under a reign that didn't enforce the opposite order when they made a law about names.

We recognize words of common origin, but I don't think we understand as much as slavic languages understand each other. However at tourist-heavy spots many vendors & waiters and other staff usually speak a few words.
