HL2's an interesting case, because I replayed both HL1 and HL2 recently and even though I used to think it was one of the best games of all time, I had more fun revisiting HL1 than 2. A lot of the things that made Half-Life 2 so special in its day are just in all games now, and its close enough to modern games that it doesn't have the novelty that an older game would have, nor play differently enough that it'd feel like what people call a "boomer shooter". Couple that with not having any investment in the story since you missed HL1 and weren't there for the dramatic and fervent lead up to HL2's release, I can see how somebody playing the game now for the first time might not be too impressed.
