I think that's less a symptom of gamers specifically, and more a trend towards games being more and more generic for mass market appeal. If you can make casuals feel empowered, even if that comes severely at the experience most "hardcore" gamers expect, executives and marketing is going to push those design decisions because it's about dollars. Make it easy, and if not, make the easy/instawin options paywalled behind p2w options.

Part of it was the changing writer atribution from 1 to 3, but part of it was also unavoidable. ME1 was fantastic because it was this amazing universe that was new, mysterious, and ripe for exploration. No matter what they did, the subsequent games were going to have to flesh out and explore that universe. Giving answers to progress the plot, but that also destroys the mystique of the world you're playing in, and removing the curiosity to explore it further.
