All of the major questlines barring Ranni's are pretty confusing to follow without already knowing what you're doing anyway. Ranni's tells you exactly where you go and what you need to do, you meet a bunch of cool NPCs, you advance it by fighting a major boss, and it gives you cool gear. It's not surprising most people fall into it without thinking.
