Just because vtubers are less reliant on physical appearance doesn't mean the average vtuber is ugly. It takes a natural charisma that often can only be developed by being attractive to be a good entertainer. Sure they probably spend less time focused on their physical appearance than a cam streamer but it's very rare for successful vtubers to be outright "ugly." Ugly people are too trapped in their own self-loathing to entertain others.

Maybe this is just the average male not appreciating how much work women put into looking pretty when they want to but Pokimane or Amouranth don't look much better than Haachama when they're not streaming.

Some girls just prefer streaming with an avatar that lets them be whatever they want and sidestep the objectification of cam streamers. Like half of NijiEN would probably be quite popular as cam streamers but just choose not to.
