For the risu canal, it's not that it wouldnt be useful, its that the landmass there is large, too large for the canal to be worth the effort. If the scale in >>19882995 is right, then /risu/ would be more massive than Japan. Digging a canal through Japan with 1700s tech would be a pretty insurmountable task.
