Retard and new, early vtubers were predominantly 3D, only when the iPhone X released (september 2018) did people realize it was really much more efficient to use it's 3 camera setup to track a simple 2D avatar because guess what, 3D is expensive and 2D is not as expensive, plus the audience doesn't require that much more.
