Plot forcing is pretty easy, and you'd be surprised what kind of stuff readers will take credulously as plot or setting details when it's stuff you just made up to force events. The best advice I've got is that a lot of writing is just magician's choice. You know, the old card thing where if you split a deck in two, and you say pick a half, if they pick A you go "great, we'll go with A" , and if they pick B you say "great, now we'll eliminate B."

If you look at anime from this season, whether you like it or not, Frieren is a very liked one with plot forcing that's clear when you think about it. It's actually almost absurd to think that no one would realize who Frieren is, and even if you argue that Serie is more ancient that Frieren and therefore is the only person who has any right to 'judge' Frieren, her only recently forming the Mage Association just doesn't quite make sense.

None of these are flaws, and if anyone pointed this stuff out I'd call it nitpicking. If you pay attention to stories, you'll start noticing magician's choice everywhere. In the case of Frieren, why? What are they forcing? Basically, the mage exam is a cool arc that's like a hunter exam/ tourney arc, that also manages to advance the Flamme subplot.

So, basically the mindset I'm suggesting is that you can always stack the deck, and honestly, it should be your natural inclination. It's a bit hard to talk about in the abstract not knowing what problem you're trying to solve, but yeah. Magician's choice.
