In a very ironic twist of perception being an “Otaku” in Japan never went from “kimoi” to “teehee, I’m a gamer girl that love anime, SAO is my favorite show, I’m such an otaku!” transition that happened in the west.

You see Mushoku Tensei protagonist? That’s how Otaku are seen there, fujoshi even more so. It’s not a surprise the only more or less “normal” girl is Subaru, the rest are all broken toys and social rejects that took refuge online
