When you start out, I'd really recommend making judicious use of pausing. try to get your shields upgraded and powered to level 2 asap, your default weaponry is good enough to take out most things through the second zone.
You want to maximize the number of jumps in each sector without getting caught by the fleet, if you don't have it on, you can learn a lot easier by having jump previews on.
Try not to neglect you secondary systems (doors, sensors, piloting) as they will be pretty important the further in you go.

Green sectors tend to be safer, and have more events, but you'll have less chance for reward which could cause you to fall behind the curve. But if you're hurting, it can be worthwhile to go to one and hope for some good repairs.

Almost never accept an enemy surrender unless they will likely kill you in the time it takes for you to finish them off.
