Plus the MMD community has 11 years of experience in creating, adapting and modifying techniques. In creative hobbyist tech communities innovation travels *fast*. The main dev of the #1 non-Holo/Niji vtuber app for example added (still rudimentary but shockingly functional) tracking for hands and individual fingers, so even people without 3D can now do elementary body language. Another person wrote a script that allows you to lolify a model without redraws by manipulating the individual layers (see image) into different proportions.

That person probably pooled know-how from literally hundreds of people for assets, techniques and choreography data.
The internet's become (non-entertainingly) shit in way too many places, but there are still places that are truly beautiful.
