I kinda get it. You start watching someone, you get attached to them in that form, and when they leave and start over they lose not only their appearance, but also their name and the circles they ran in before. And as a VShojo+Indie viewer I've seen a handful of radical redesigns (Zen probably being the most notable when she went from dragon to cyborg) but even when someone got a completely new look they were still themselves so it's inherently less drastic than someone who watched them as a previous identity would experience.

So even when you go from cute super nerdy girl_dm_ to picrel it's still less strange than Mysta -> Kuro or something lol.
