In a game and series where directions on where to go and what to do are typically nebulous at best, Ranni's questline actually laying out a roadmap for the player to take (compared to every other path being either boring and effortless or extremely obtuse) practically ensures that most people will follow it. The only natural way to avoid it would be to never go to Caria in the first place or deliberately refuse when being handed extra content on a platter.

I assumed that the thing Ranni does here is like an automated ward of some kind. The message she says doesn't change if you've sworn an oath to her, and the second phase even goes off if she's in one of her deep sleeps so it doesn't seem to require actual input from Ranni.

I play melee only, use the heaviest armor I can without fatrolling and I swing two huge-ass greatswords. I do this not because I think it's the "best" or "right" way to play, but merely because my caveman brain doesn't like having two many options so "roll, heal, or unga-bunga with swords" are the only choices I want in a fight. I think if players want to invest runes into levelling FP to use summons and more runes into upgrading them, then that's an investment in their build that is valid, in the same way my strategy is. All Holos who beat the bosses deserve praise. There are no half victories. If you beat the boss you win.
