Oh, you're talking about the genealogy given in either Genesis or the Gospels I presume? Those existed mainly for contextual and thematic reasons. In the case of Christ's genealogy, it was mostly there to 1) prove that He was a descendant of King David, which was one of the requirements that had to be fulfilled to be the messiah foretold of in prophecy, and 2) to humble the arrogant Judaeans by highlighting that they, like all the other nations, are the descendants not *just* of glorious patriarchs like Abraham and Jacob and David, but also of harlots, murderers and other such sinners.
Also bear in mind that many tribes of that time and place were the namesake of their founding ancestral patriarch (Israelites, Ishmaelites, Kushites, Canaanites, Moabites, etc.), which would have been more politically and culturally relevant to contemporary Israelites and Jews because those tribes were neighbors of theirs. Thus showing the origins and relations between these patriarchs, going all the way back to Adam in many cases, would have had clearer relevance and meaning to them than to modern readers.
