Laterite brick buildings are definitely aesthetically pleasing, and apparently they're fairly easy to work with, so it's a good choice for more permanent buildings compared with wood. Granite is definitely much more weather-resistant, but the same hardness also works against it being a material, as you'll need a lot of effort to cut them into building blocks, something that I don't think /risu/ would have a lot of (both in terms of population and state apparatus required to organise them into tedious work like this).
