This concept where the buildings continually sink as new modules are built and old ones sink into the depths is so cool, brings up this image of the colonies being all shiny and pretty at the top, and they become increasingly tattered and poorly maintained as you go deeper. A bit similar to a hive city, the deepest levels would have the lowest property values, and depending on the demographics that might be where you have the most crime... That could be a cool place to have some kind of Bioshock-esque adventure where the risk of drowning is a real as that of being stabbed in the back.
It kinda reminds me of a desert setting where people would keep building their cities in the same spot as the existing construction continually sank into the sands. I love this.
I wonder what excuses you could have to have installations deeper in the ocean... Maybe exotic lifeforms could be found there? Weird algaes?
