Right, getting addicted to drugs you depend on to function in war makes sense, was pretty common with morphine iirc. That would make reintegration of veterans into civilian life more interesting too. That AI setup reminds me of Macross Plus, there's actually this scenario of an AI-assisted mech reading the thoughts of the pilot a bit too smartly and executing an offensive command that is what the pilot wants, but not what he would do. Though in that case it's officially blamed on a bug in the software instead of the pilot or the AI... If they're so effective the people selling and using that tech would have a pretty strong incentive to silence this kind of incident. (Also Macross Plus is pretty great, it does some things with human-AI relations that you might find inspiring, would recommend).
