I think there's two ways it could go. One where they do eventually find out and grieve for your death, keeping you in their hearts before moving on, like >>63212303 had suggested.
But I'm a sucker for self-sacrifice so the other version could be good too, where they never find out the truth and end up resenting you for leaving because they thought you were sick of them. They use that anger to fuel their ambition and rise to even greater heights, with your only known legacy being the man who fucked off somewhere and abandoned them to live a different life.
