Yeah, at first I got turned off by the lengthy tutorial spam and the gathering quests. And the slow movement didn't help. But I think I just needed to get over the beginner hump, because once I started hunting the bigger monsters and chasing them around the map and actually taking a lot of damage from their hits, that's when the combat started to click. Those early tutorial and gathering missions really suck the hype out of the game but if you don't go through them then you're gonna get lost.
