People don't realize that public statements are absolutely necessary in any trial because the whole POINT of a public-facing trial is public perceptions. Lawyers are literally trained to talk to the press, and clients are often given interviews with the press. If they don't do this, the other side can run ham with the media and destroy the client's whole livelihood regardless of the outcome of the case.

The statement was phrased badly, but the worst thing has been their recent silence which has allowed claims and speculation to fester.
