It was before mainstream internet access and cellphone use, so fucking off into the woods from sunrise and not coming home until the fireflies were out was, quite sincerely, my actual childhood. No phone, no supervision, no CCTV, a higher than average number of venomous snakes. 9/11 was a catalyst of sorts, but I think the rise of being always-online (and furthermore expected to be constantly available for work and other people) entrenched it. A lot of people shitpost about "back in my day!" but before the millennium turned over, it really was a very different time. Not necessarily a better time, but certainly a different one. Absolutely a quieter one.
