Secondarily but not what you were actually asking about but I think is really important about this particular piece is the balance, one side is very streamlined and smooth while the other has a jagged and more visually interesting edge that makes it the focus, it's also closer to the 'camera' but makes adds onto the foreshortening on the closer arm to give it perspective and tell us where we're meant to be looking.
Notice how the hand in the back doesn't actually have all of it's lines - it's just the shading in the palm and lines on one side - because it's relying on the face that your attention is more on the other side.
