They do it because every time they do it, they feel like they are a good boy who has done a meritous deed.
It is an instinct many species of humanoids have; by following the fashions validated by power, they feel like they are doing their duty to society.
The problem here of course is that in cases like this, the instinct is malformed, maladapted, and misappropriated.
