You're not wrong, but it's not the main driving force. Takamori' popularity is due to two main very simple factors:
1 - Because people like Kiara or Mori, every Takamori artist also has one of them as their Oshi, and ships them because because it's fun.

2- EXACTLY because everyone is aware that it's kayfabe and "fake", if it was something legit with people believing they were a real couple, fans wouldn't have as much fun with it. Artists have literally all the freedom to make any kind of Takamori art and it's ok, now try to make something like pic related about Crossick, fans would be criticizing the artist for misportraying their relationship, it's really no fun allowed.

I mean have you seen a /u/ thread? I've been in a few and Jesus it was always like this, Takamori fans post cute art and talk a bit about cute moments having lighthearted fun, while everyone else is going fucking NUCLEAR arguing and attacking each other over all sorts of dumb shit like who's fake and who's genuine and all that, with retarded tribalism on who's the real lesbian and all sorts of dumb shit. Now that I think about, it's like one of those "average fan vs average enjoyer" memes, it's kinda hilarious even.
