I don't think heave-ho is really that great of a translation for yoisho. Heave-ho is usually used to help sync up a bunch of people at once when they're doing a physical activity like pulling a rope at the same time.

From my understanding yoisho is just giving a word to a grunt you would normally make when doing any kind of strenuous physical action. For old people even standing up can be a strenuous physical activity, which explains why they would say yoisho more.
