I think it happened back when they were aggressively trying to force Google+ upon youtube. Had the same issue and had to wade through tons of "just press the button" advice to finally find it.

I did this and it worked without any issues. Didn't lose anything, didn't have to use the google account name and didn't even lose my "Joined 300 years ago" in the about section.

Can't do it on a brand account. There is a box in chat that pops up asking you if you want to turn them on when somebody gifts memberships.
Took me ages of people telling me about that retarded box before I found out about the brand account stuff.

You can "unbrand" you account and it doesn't change the way your name looks - or anything else.
Still no idea why the retards over at Google decided to turn old accounts into brand accounts and why those can't get memberships.
