It's harder, but can work. Once I was stuck on a dungeon in Tales of Symphonia, I ranted to my SO about the dungeon I was stuck in and he was like "Alright, but tell me what did you do so far."
I was annoyed and didn't listen, kept ranting. He again said "Alright, but what did you do so far? What was the first puzzle? What parts did you move around?". I was coaxed into retelling everything to him about that dungeon. While I was telling him, I realized a certain part I had skipped, some switch I hadn't paid as much attention. Then he told me he does it on his own while programming, to debug. That's how I was taught about the rubber ducky debug: You voice out loud all your steps to a person (or an object, the 'rubber ducky') until you manage to spot where is the problem. The method is effective because in order to explain something to someone, you first must organize the situation inside your head. And in this part where you're "organizing the idea" is where the solution (or debug) appears.
From the way I see theraphy, it's just a sophisticated form of this same process. You tell your life to someone, they bounce back at you with questions about yourself, you talk more until you're able to spot the problem.
