That happens to me a lot as well when doing summaries which is a pretty scary thought, because sometimes the thing I thought I heard was an entirely different meaning to what it actually was that I finally understood on the xth re-listen.
It really helps to be thorough if you are going to try to understand because it is very easy to jump the gun when you are still learning. And of course it is really frustrating to be sure about something and end up being told you were actually wrong about it, but as long as you can convert that frustration to motivation rather than hurt pride then it is all good.

That is something that will eventually go away in time, I remember that exact feeling you are describing in that your head just tries to auto-translate it which locks you up and makes you miss even more spoken words.
It still happens to me occasionally, usually when something more rare comes up but I've been gradually getting that "unconscious" understanding feeling rather than the stupid brute force "Translate this into English" reaction.
