It's not unheard of. They're barely allowed to intake any salt, their food is basically hardtack, no sugar aside from maybe a small packet of honey to eat with their hardtack, and they're not allowed to buy anything even vaguely resembling "snack food" at the camp store. One of the few things they're allowed is packets of pepper, but only one per day and at breakfast. So sometimes they resort to saving those pepper packets until dinner cause it has no seasoning, and they just have pepper and slop. The marine diet is literally inhuman, it's not meant to nourish a person, it's meant to train them to survive inhuman conditions and just barely keep them alive.
