>and was always built on quick-fire emotional moments to get the plot going (Marth dad dies offscreen
Yeah and there they had the decency to get it over with quickly instead of spending ten minutes on a dying monologue with the Marth wailing over his death. Engage has the most overwrought death scene I've seen since Eternal Sonata.
>Bad writing is RD or Fates, where everything you talked about happens but it also has no idea how to get the plot moving so it just makes shit along the way.
In Engage's case the problem is that there just isn't any downtime in the story itself, everything moves at rapid pace, there are no interludes in between major event locations so everything feels incredibly rushed and the world-building is just nonexistent, and it's that constant sense of brevity that makes the attempts at serious drama fall flat because there's zero emotional investment. You meet Lumera and she immediately dies, you go to Brodia and see the king for five minutes and he immediately dies, Marth shows up for the first time in seven chapters to tell you how glad he is to be with you and then you immediately get NTR'd, it's absolutely amateurish in how badly these moments are executed. It's the same writer as Fates by the way.
> FE has always been about characters and the cast here is pretty strong
I agree with the former but I strongly disagree with the latter, Engage has mostly good designs but the character writing is probably the weakest of all the games I've played sans perhaps RD. The characters are incredibly one note and the supports are really brief and similarly one-note for most of them. Louis is based though.

>the first scene is your character going ''why the fuck would i fight the weird skeletals'' and then later on you have a character perform a jumping dogeza.
>the game has a joke scene so it isn't serious
You are too dumb to discuss narratives if you can't even understand that comedy is present in any serious story to balance out the serious parts. The presence of one visual gag does not somehow mean the entire game is a total joke.
>first play the game if you are gonna complain
I'm up to chapter 16, how 'bout you?
