Dumb question, are those guide books on how to draw useful to someone who wants to draw anime style? Most of the ones I see focus on realistic drawings, should I follow them or go after those "how to draw manga" magazines? I've never learned the fundamentals so I don't really know where to start...

Art is unfortunately kind of a numbers game; the more hours you put into it, the better you get. She's probably racked up a lot of hours as a working professional, so it'd be hard to catch up at a leisurely pace.
It's entirely possible to go from complete novice to professional level within a year or two, but you have to be prepared to make sacrifices to pull off something like that.
FZD, for example, prides itself on boosting beginners to professional level with a 1-year intensive course; but with that comes nightmare stories of constant 20-hour days and no weekends off. It really kind of depends on how much you're willing into invest into improving.

Remember, Ina does this for a living, so she's naturally going to have a lot more experience and time under her belt than most hobbyists. It's natural, and you shouldn't beat yourself up over that. There aren't really any cheat codes in art, so just try to absorb what you can and enjoy the journey.
