You'll like Hibiki then, it gets heavy at times (not like edgy heavy but the character's problems feel weighty and human) but it also knows when to be light and very comfortable. Otherside picnic, which is fresh in my mind, is a fun romp that dips regularly into horror without being too dark on the ramifications

For manga? Shit let me think, I'm actually not huge in high fantasy, when I read scifi anything it's usually very low fantasy. This might be a lazy answer because you've probably read it but Blame! is great: great atmosphere and designs.

I don't read shounen, kind of burned myself out of that and ecchi stuff back when I was a preteen. I should really keep track of what I read.

Well compared to Shounen 70 chapters would be short. But maybe you mean like 2 volumes? I think Angel Densetsu would suit you though, it's extremely wholesome
