Because there is the equivalent of the "mandate of heaven" on the stock markets now, with some big pension funds subscribing to the new "ESG" orthodoxy and refusing to invest in any company without the "seal of approval".
Even NASDAQ now has a "completely voluntary" ESG disclosure for companies and S&P has an "ESG index" out of which Tesla, an electric car company was kicked out

while Exxon Mobil was still listed.

There is a very fine line you have to walk to remain solvent in this modern western world, not a lot different from the different type of lines one would have to walk in China to remain solvent
