16 bit games were hard. Most kids didn't try to brute force their games and played until they got a game over or two, put in another game, or did something else like go outside.

Easy access to games, especially free to play, and the way they are made to keep you playing for hours wasn't something that was common. Gaming on the internet wasn't as viable until later as well due to slow adoption of multiple phone lines or the advent of DSL.
