because it's always easier to say that you're "sick" than to ask for a day off or a vacation. This is true in the office. It's true in vtubing. Have you ever seen a major vtuber talk about a break or a vacation without some massive padding and zatsu? Or like, announce a sudden absence without some kind of medical/personal issue excuse? I'm sure many vtubers have real issues, but looking at it through a "business lens" it's just a convenient and easy way to give your talents breaks and also still maintain engagement and income.

(I.E "oh no my favorite 114k small indie GFE is sick with a stomach condition. She can't stream sometimes and this makes me sad, but not mad at her, it's not her fault.")

This does a few things:

1) Secures an extended leave of absence
2) Rallies the fans for support, possibly boosting reach (also scrambles the white knights to defend against naysayers)
3)Allows the company to maintain engagement and income, despite no active presence except maybe social media.

Fish is all about minimizing risk. He probably changed the terms after losing a hefty investment in Yuri. She had recently gained an expensive new model that Phase paid for and then was gone in a few months. I bet it left him feeling a bit burned. I imagine he rewrote Invaders in order to fully control the IP so that he could have a further level of control and the incoming invaders would have less negotiating powers. Also, they wouldn't have a fan base that so easily melds over, so no former whales to sneakily deal with behind Sakana's back. I imagine the contract change and the lack of IP retention is the reason why Lisa and Sex Dog did not join this time around.

Personally I thought Yuri's community wasn't meshing well with the overall of Phase Connect. If you visited their discord, it was kind of loosely connected. The incentive was more to sink further into her own other discord and audience. My thinking is that Yuri's vision is too independent-minded to deal with the corporate constraints, after all, PC has changed Lumi and Yuri a lot with rebranding and such.

This is the end point for all fans of vtubers. Regardless of your choice of who to follow, it always winds up with realizations on a similar level and (hopefully) a desire to separate.

It puts a kind of a sinister spin on the whole thing, because we're basically being farmed because of our loneliness/social ineptitude.
