its not one thing, more like a bunch of factors piled up together

>The FE references are either low hanging fruit (In that timeframe, it was hip to shill Awakening+Shadow Dragon) or utter obscure nonsensical shit (Like a shopkeeper sharing a color scheme/name with a character from another game)

That's the gist of it. Personally the game is REALLY boring, it plays well enough but its like eating crackers
Im not disgusted but it really lacks flavor. Doesnt help that its fanbase inherited the persona brain disease where they praise it as a hidden gem. Fun fact the game got a re-release and failed to sell once more, further cementing it as an utter failure
