I don't think showing consideration for those around you makes you 'lesser'. We might display our compassion in different ways, but just because our displays are different doesn't make our value as humans different.

It may have originated as just the word 'black' but it's since evolved, as all language does. If there's any word in the English language that's a slur, it's the word 'nigger.' I also don't think a recent sensitivity to the word made it a slur, that's just a weird take lol.
