Universal Century's world building is pretty grounded
>endless civil wars and strife of the late 20th-early 21st century
>the Super UN that forms during this time decides to pursue near Earth space colonization in order to address the growing Earth population and the environmental impacts from it
>over time this becomes less of a humanitarian mission and more of a way to push all the undesirables into space leaving Earth for the Jezz Bezoses of the world
>some time later some guy starts working on how to finally achieve cold fusion and figures it out, but there's a catch: the fusion they developed produces a new type of particle that can carry charge, follows special relativity, and when spread out over open space jams radio, IR, and even some optical wavelengths
>later after this some other guy in one of the colonies starts going "hey the Earth is supposed to be our sacred birthplace and should be protected and those who leave it for space will take the first step into humanity's next evolution"
>this guy, Zeon zum Deikun, starts a socio-political following based off this in some of the colonies due to how the Earth-based Super UN treats the Earth and those living in space (spacenoids)
>eventually their colony cluster, furthest from the Earth and behind the moon, starts becoming more autonomous and starts to push the Super UN for full independence
>in the same colony there's this family of other people who mostly believe in what Zeon zum Deikun preaches but there are some ulterior motives at play for following him. These are the Zabis.
>one day Zeon zum Deikun just rando mly collapses while giving a speech and supposedly the last words he gave were to the eldest Zabi, Degwin, was for him to take the reigns of his movement and the leadership of the colony they live in (of course this is all according to the Zabis after the fact)
>Zeon zum Deikun is survived only by his two children, a boy and girl who become important later
>the Zabis proceed to PURGE anybody who would get in their way and form the Principality of Zeon
>fast forward a couple of years and Zeon has started to militarize itself, despite sanctions and political pressure from the Earth Federation
>said militarization includes the newest weapon developed for space and even land combat: the mobile suit
>said mobile suit is a 18-20 meter tall mecha powered by the same cold fusion generators mentioned before
>because said cold fusion generators make the particle that blocks any sort of radio signal this means that radar guided weapons and other precision weapons don't work, and mobile suits were developed to exploit this new aspect of combat returning to within visual range as they're human limbed robots with mostly medium ranged hand held weapons and even melee weapons
>eventually tensions flare over, Zeon decides to make an all or nothing strike on the Earth Federation to secure their independence and to make an ideological statement
>the skirmishes that followed the first clashes between the Earth Federation and Zeon resulted in billions of people dying as multiple clusters of space colonies were trapped in the crossfire
>the Earth Federation space fleet was decimated because of the deployment of the new Zeon Zaku mobile suits, which basically danced around all of their heavily armed but slow and big warships and outmaneuvered all of the space fighters that the EF had
>with the EF hurt hard Zeon decided to make one decisive strike on them
>using a colony (whose inhabitants Zeon gassed) Zeon attempts to drop said colony on the Earth Federation HQ located in a cave complex in Brazil
>a last minute attempt at interception by the Earth Federation forces somehow diverts the colony's path
>however this lands squarely on Sydney, Australia instead. The entire city is wiped off the face of the Earth and the tsunamis and earthquakes caused by this ravage multiple other cities around the globe while the fallout from the impact also alters global climate
>after all of this indiscriminate warfare that included exchanges of nuclear arms half of the human population is dead
>Zeon starts their invasion of Earth and the One Year War starts
Basically it's one part American Revolution, one part Russian Revolution, one part WWII, and all parts IN SPACE
