The short answer is that, evolutionarily, it has to do with being guarded, focused and in control of your emotions, because men with those traits are more dependable in times of need or crisis, and therefore better able to serve the tribe. This is also why males will bully other males who are weird into being normal - to make sure that they're in fighting shape, basically.
Personally, as a chud who really likes cute things, I can strongly empathize with both sides. Bottom line is that it can be fine, it's a matter of not seeming like a fag when you do it, i.e. giving a more paternalistic vibe rather than basically squeeing and fawning. That's more conducive to nurturing something, ergo feminine
