The description of Elysium kind of makes me interpret "gaining sentience" as "breaking the illusion". The way I'm thinking about it is that the timeline of Utopia is divided into three parts:
1) Pre-corruption: Everything is fine, people are abandoning the material realm to live peaceful lives in Utopia.
2) Corruption: Records Corruption takes hold, things take a downturn. Xenokuni is more severely affected because of its distance to the world tree, forcing people to find craft their own solutions and doubt the "it is what it is" attitude of Elysians. There's small lore tidbits about it, I can compile it somewhere to get a clearer sense of it.
3) Adventuring: People take up adventuring to find a solution to the Records Corruption. Here, my headcanon is that Altare was the first one to initiate the fight against corruption by adventuring, rather than accepting the reality of it and only fighting corruption defensively.

This would place the boys at the middle of the Adventuring era, where they're reached a level of expertise and helping out others with their own adventures. They'd still go out themselves for large threats but most of their day-to-day would be about working in the guild, helping out other adventurers.
