>they found Marley the night of Shadow's grandfather (he raise dher and was like her father)'s funeral
>he gave the entire family hope and reason to continue living
>her mother deals with loss the same as Shondo, very emotional I imagine, she's the depressive type from what Shadow has said before too, and her grandmother is her best friend and loves her very much
>Marley comes home, all of his litter get into food they shouldn't have before this and they're all fine except Marley, leading Shadow to believe he might've had some sort of compromised system, he also had trouble waking up from the anaesthesia after he was neutered so she thinks he just wasn't strong enough for surgery
>Marley is very loving, Shadow says it's impossible to understand what having him was like unless you have had a sphynx yourself. She said they're not like cats but babies, you have to revolve your whole life around them
>months ago Marley loved playing with hair ties/bobbles but he puked one up eventually and they immediately confiscated them all and catproofed the house
>in a rare 5 minutes he was left alone he flipped a box of hair ties that were somewhere they thought he couldn't reach and either hid a stash of them or gobbled them up
>he's fine for weeks
>suddenly starts puking about a week ago, he goes to the vet, they give him an anti-sickness shot that makes him extremely lethargic and ill, and then he pukes again before the shot should've worn off
>rush him to the emergency vet immediately and they keep him in to xray him, say she can pick him up later, she doesn't get to say goodbye to him
>Shadow also tells the vet he had a bad reaction to the anti-sickness shot and she thinks he can't have it again
>they decide to keep him in overnight and pump him with fluid since they found a mass of hair elastic in his stomach
>apparently this is normal for cats but usually they can poop them out eventually
>Marley couldn't, so they have to operate. They say it's a simple procedure but has very slight risk
>put him to sleep, say they'll call back in 2 hours once the surgery is complete, 5 hours pass to nothing, Shadow's mom has to harass them to get a call back
>finally they call and say the surgery was a success but they're having trouble waking him up and they gave him an anti-sickness shot since he was puking
>5 minutes later they call back and say he's dying
>Shadow and her mom drop to the floor and beg for them to bring him back
>Shadow prays for the first time in her life and says she will do or give anything for him to make it
>they try for 10m to resuscitate him but he's gone
>they go to see him, Shadow thought he was alive at first because of how he was wrapped. They kissed him and said they could never have a pet again.
>they brought him home and buried him with his favorite blankets and toys. Everyone kissed him, her brother dug the grave as the man of the house.
>entire family is devastated and completely hopeless like they were before Marley came to them, he filled the whole house with hope and love. Shadow doesn't know how anyone will go on living.
>her grandmother grabbed her by the shoulders and begged her to stay for her sake, since they're best friends and Shadow is all she has, they have to stick together and she can't stand losing Shadow.
>Shadow's mom calls the lady they got Marley from. She expected her to be mad that Marley passed so young in their care but she was devastated on their behalf. Marley's litter was an accident but she decided to do one more before she got them neutered as she loves the kittens and is a cat lady. Both parents are the same.
>she wants Shadow and her mom to come meet the kittens and maybe take one, they refuse
>she convinces them they did deserve Marley and he couldn't have been happier anywhere else, and the short life he had was so filled with love and memories and she's so glad that they took him (good woman, I like her already)
